A good Scrubs episode?

stephI love Scrubs.But I love it the way you love your old elementary school, or your great aunt who used to bring you the best Christmas presents, but who now corners you at the family party to discuss the virtues of fiber in one’s diet. That is, it was great once, but I don’t find nearly the enjoyment there I once did.

Tomorrow night’s episode is going to be a musical. OK, half of you are already done, I know. A whole lot of folks out there have no interest in people spontaneously breaking out into song and choreographed dance, and if there’s anything worse than a musical, it’s a TV musical.

But before you run screaming, know this: The producers brought in ringers for this episode, in the form of Jeff Marx and Bobby Lopez, two of the creators of the Tony-winning Avenue Q. Ask someone who saw this show. It was good. And it wasn’t your standard musical; it was a smart, edgy, pop culture fest that also managed to say a little something about early adult life. When I was looking at one of the previews that are plastered all over the web, I realized that the guest star for the Scrubs episode is Stephanie D’abruzzo, who starred in Avenue Q and was funny and charming as hell. So, bonus.

As the first show I ever specced, Scrubs has a special place in my heart, so I have continued to watch every episode, only to be fairly consistently disappointed. (See the episode before last, in which Cox is transformed into Dr. House, for a particularly dreadful recent example. Did they purposely choose two all-but-unique medical conditions that were on episodes of House?)

Maybe Scrubs doesn’t deserve yet another chance. And maybe a musical TV episode is just never, never, never a good idea (unless your name is Joss Whedon.) But watch My Musical with me tonight. Let’s hope that a very, very talented group can knock one more out of the park. If it doesn’t work, I promise we can cross Scrubs off our watchlists together.
