My Regular Reads:

empire buildin’

June 24th, 2007 by screenwriterguy

Web peopleMy plans to dominate the universe through online sketch comedy progress steadily onward. At times I feel like my overall strategy is about as advanced as that of the Underpants Gnomes. (Step 1. Collect underpants. Step 2. ??? Step 3. Profit!) But then I calmly remind myself that I’ve done this whole sketch comedy thing before, and building a collection of produced material is as goos a way to get my writing out there as any.

I had more than a hundred applicants respond to one ad or the other, and it has consumed a whole lot of my time to sort through them and then plan lunch or coffee with people, and then finally select the crew that I want to come audition. Yep, all that before they even come to an audition; I’m being super particular about personalities and want a diverse but collaborative mix of people. Hopefully the results will justify the four weeks of meeting people. There can be no doubt that I messed up somewhere along the line and didn’t select someone who will prove to be the next Jim Carey, but all I can do is follow my instincts.

Anyway, I finally sent out invitations, and we’ll be having auditions next Sunday. I’m planning a three-hour session to really get to see everyone shine. I’ve invited a director and producer I want to work with, who can hopefully help me make final decisions, plus 14 writers and actors. I’m guessing I’m looking for a final group of 8-10. Now I just need to plan a bunch of writing and improv exercises, and buy a whole lot of refreshments.

Time to go to work. Work all night.
Search for underpants, hey.
We won’t stop till we have underpants.
Yum tum yummy tum tay!
