Please Watch Letterman
December 28th, 2007 by screenwriterguy
It’s the first tiny crack of progress in the writers’ strike: Letterman’s production company, Worldwide Pants, has successfully negotiated to come back on January 2nd, along with the rest of the late-night shows, with the major difference that he will have writers. How did he do it? He gave the writers what they’re asking for.
That’s going to have to put some pressure on the other networks, whose ratings will undoubtedly be smaller than a fresh show that’s actually written. Plus, there’s no doubt Dave will actually talk about the strike, and he–like the other hosts–has actively supported the writers.
If there weren’t already a million reasons to prefer Letterman to Leno, there’s one big one now.

…owning his own production company helps. His support of the writers is one reason in a million to watch I guess, but I just can’t stomach a “host” who is often rude to guests, and frankly, is not that funny. His top ten lists have been tired for years, and I hope that perhaps he’ll let his writers start scripting his interviews. Then maybe he’ll be worth watching again. Craig Ferguson, on the other hand, is funny. Which is also probably why he’s not on until 1 a.m….

OK, well Craig Ferguson is also produced by Worldwide Pants, so if you don’t want to support Letterman, support Ferguson. He’ll have writers back, too, so that’s another program adding pressure to the networks that haven’t yet negotiated.
