United Artists doing WGA side deal?

January 5th, 2008 by screenwriterguy

United ArtistsIf we can believe the report from Deadline Hollywood Daily, this weekend United Artists has negotiated a deal with the WGA. This means they are the ONE studio with the ability to hire guild writers and move their movie production forward. Huge advantage.

Perhaps the guild’s strategy is seeing payoff. It seems that the AMPTP’s decision to stay away from the table is allowing the WGA to chip away at the powers that be. If nothing else, this strike is definitely proving to be intriguing. There can be no doubt we are witnessing industry history of some sort, however it may turn out.

Think what you may about Tom Cruise, it’s hard to argue that this move doesn’t honor the spirit of UA’s founding.
