The ABC web site is almost a very good viewing experience.  Almost the best of the networks.  What keeps it from being the best?  Seriously annoying insertion of commercials.

Now, I don’t mind commercials.  They pay for this industry.  It’s great to see media via the internet moving to a legitimate sponsor model, and after all the networks need some revenue not to share with the writers.  But ABC’s site insists that you “click to continue” every time a commercial ends.  That means you can’t park your butt and veg.

But I discovered a workaround this morning.  If you watch all the commercials at the beginning, then the whole thing will play through.  Click on the beginning of each act before you watch, and endure Essentially, you “unlock” each section by watching its commercial.  Sure, it’s a pain in the ass to sit through six overproduced cutesy fake Christmas pageants rhyming about Target.  But it’s less of a pain in the ass than getting up every ten minutes.

Still not perfect, but now at least it’s the best.

OK, so what did everyone think of the ending?  To me, it was a punch in the gut, but if you rethink, realizing that this is the origin story of a supervillain, it’s pretty.  I loved the art of the last shot of Billy in street clothes.  After all, he’s honest when he blogs, and he does it as who he wants to be.  Is Batman the mask, or is Bruce Wayne?

Neat cameo for Whedon nerds in the appearance of Marti Noxon and David Fury as news anchors.  The pair were executive producers on Buffy and Angel, respectively, and were singers in the musical episode of Buffy.  (“It isn’t right, it isn’t fair.  There was no parking anywhere. …” and “They got… the mustard… OUT!”)

Want to get even nerdier?  Two of the members of the Evil League of Evil were also Buffy writer/producers.  Doug Petrie is credited as “Professor Normal,” and Drew Goddard played “Fake Thomas Jefferson.”  Hey, it was during the writers’ strike.  They had time.

For a moment, temporary dissatisfaction at the ending left me thinking a sequel inevitable.  After all, the credits do say, “Introducing the Evil League of Evil.”  You can imaging loving the exploits of such a group.  And with someone like Liz Vassey (The Tick, CSI) playing such a tiny, non-speaking part, one imagines perhaps some real deliberation went into casting the League, a prelude to more.  But then I realized her appearance probably owes to the connection that Petrie now works on CSI. No doubt one can reverse engineer most of the involvements back to a degree or two of separation from Whedon’s rolodex.  After all, Felicia Day and Nathan Fillion have done Whedon projects before.  And Alyson Hannigan from Buffy is now on How I Met Your Mother with Neil Patrick Harris…

Well, congrats to all involved.  And Joss, way to make great art again, all while giving the studios the finger.  A hundred years from now, some history book on the birth of so-called “new media” will undoubetedly list Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog as a historic milestone in the merging of internet and television.

Speaking of three-named people who are middle-named Patrick, this wonderosity I’m describing stars Neil Patrick Harris. Plus, Nathan Fillion of Firefly. Plus, the perfect woman, Felicia Day. Oh, and it’s a JOSS freakin’ WHEDON production! Sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet. (Just so you know, I was typing that last sentence, and had to go back and put in another “sweet.”) The project is “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-along Blog” and Whedon is describing it as, “The best 40-minute musical since the last one I made.” So far as I can tell, it’s only coming to the internet. This has to be the project that one of BrevityTV’s producers was super-close to getting to line produce. Now I’m so very, very sad for her that she last-minute didn’t get it. Sad face.

I can finally say that the internet will, with the arrival of this project, at last be a legitimate source of entertainment. (Hmm. maybe a guy who runs an internet television web site shouldn’t make comments like that….)

Besides having been featured in season 7 of Buffy, Felicia’s face is familiar from the current Cheetos commercials in which the protagonist ruins a cranky woman’s laundry with fiery hot Cheetos. I find myself, like the character Zaboo in the series, wanting to stalk her. I mean, she’s cute, a ridiculously talented actor who crafts sharp writing, and when building her own creative outlet chooses to tell stories about gaming nerds?! How hot is that?
